The Air Force announced a significant update to physical fitness requirements and the timing of testing, effective 1 July 2026. To enhance professional readiness and prioritize personal health, the Air Force is transitioning to bi-annual testing, effectively reducing the rest window between assessments.
Transition Period
Current fitness standards will still be in effect between 1 March and 30 June 2026. During this time all fitness testing will be diagnostic only, allowing Airmen time to become acclimated to the new fitness standards. Starting 1 July 2026, official testing begins with the new standards.
Assessment Components and Options
The Physical Fitness Assessment (PFA) remains focused on four core pillars but with the new standards, Airmen may choose between traditional exercises or approved functional alternatives:
|
Component |
Standard Exercise |
Alternative Option |

2-mile run |
20-meter HAMR (shuttle run) |

Inclusion on Performance Briefs
The Secretary of War has directed that PFA results be included in official performance briefs for both officers and enlisted personnel. This change is effective as of February 2026 for colonels and begins for lieutenant colonels, majors, and chief master sergeants in May 2026.
